Selection & Interview Process

Our recruitment process has been developed as a York St John University/Hope Sentamu Learning Trust partnership to ensure it is rigorous and that it enables you to have a range of opportunities to demonstrate your potential to become an effective teacher.

Selection is based on evidence provided throughout the application process and includes assessment of your:

  • Academic, professional or vocational qualifications, including subject-specific knowledge;
  • Personal statement;
  • Overall performance at interview;
  • References.

Interviews take place in one of our partnership schools. Typical activities include a short teaching activity, a literacy task and an individual interview with a panel made up of Hope Sentamu Learning Trust and York St John University staff.  Prior to the interview, you will be asked to complete a safeguarding declaration form and you will also be asked questions relating to safeguarding in the interview. There will also be opportunities for you to discuss your prior achievement/experience and ask us any questions.

If you are successful at interview, we will make you a conditional offer of a place and, upon acceptance,  you will be supported to prepare for the programme through our comprehensive induction process.

Places on the programme are limited and recruitment takes place on a rolling basis throughout the year. Once our programme is full, it will be closed and we will not accept any more applications. As such, we recommend that you apply as soon as possible to avoid missing out on the opportunity to train with us.

Fees and Funding

Tuition fees for the Secondary school-centred PGCE programme are £9,250. York St John University alumni receive a 10% reduction off this fee.

You may be eligible for a tax free bursary or scholarship to help fund your training. Please see here for more information to help you to understand what funding and practical support you could be eligible for.
