Ofsted reports Academy has clear vision for the future

Archbishop Sentamu Academy (ASA) in Hull has been given the ‘requires improvement’ grading by Ofsted at a recent inspection, just three months after the school moved over to the Hope Sentamu Learning Trust and a new Executive Principal took the helm.

The report acknowledges the appointment of the new head whose senior team ‘have a clear vision for the school.’ Inspectors also report that ‘Several new systems to support the school’s improvement have been introduced’ which ‘are starting to bring about the required change.’

Helen Dowds, who officially took up her position as Executive Principal at ASA on 1 September 2021, said “We are a school on a journey of improvement and are encouraged that the inspectors recognise the progress we have already made in just a few short months. We have already implemented positive changes, which include curriculum development, school improvement, updating policies and procedures, behaviour and attendance management and the inspectors recognised that these are beginning to be embedded across the school.”

The academy, which has more than 1400 pupils, has been asked by inspectors to continue to improve student behaviour and work to ensure the new subject curriculums are fully embedded across the school. However, within the report, inspectors acknowledge that ‘new leadership is making a positive difference’ and that ‘there has been a focus on improving behaviour.’

Helen Winn, CEO of Hope Sentamu Learning Trust said “This report provides us with a platform to build upon to ensure that Archbishop Sentamu Academy provides all students with the educational delivery and environment that they deserve. We recognise and appreciate the positive commitment of our staff, parents/carers and the local community during this time and vow to do our very best for everyone at ASA.”
